than the others (so five have exactly equal weight). Given a scale, how few measurements can you make to identify the "heavy" ball?

4

the answer is two. if you place three on one side and three on the other, you are guaranteed that one side will weigh more. Take the three from the heavy side; one of those is the heavy ball. take any two of the three. put one on each side. if one of the balls is heavier than the other, then obviously we have found the heavy ball. if the two sides are equal, then the third ball must be the heavy ball.
