Good people, but there was a bit of a lack of direction

Former Employee - Engineering Intern in Huntsville, AL

I worked at AMRDEC as an intern (more than 3 years)

The work I did was interesting and I got to play with sophisticated software and equipment.
Overall compensation was very good for an intern.

Working in a military setting means you have to adapt to lots of annoyances, mostly revolving around security. Checkpoints when entering for instance make traffic a hassle and woe be unto you if you lose your ID card.

The people I was working with were busy a lot of the time and it took more time than I think it should have for me to start doing actual engineering tasks. My first while as an intern, I was mostly asked to work on largely arbitrary tasks which was completely unfulfilling. It got better as I stayed longer, but I never really felt that I was getting the full use out of my skill set.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more effort into getting interns in places that their skills are relevant. Can't really do anything about the security stuff of course since that stuff comes from on high.

    Negative Outlook
