Too much Good Ol Boy and Girl Management - they need to look forward and not be happy in their corner offices.

I worked at ATMI full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The personnel base is a very collaborative one that is willing to work together, team up and share ideas, techniques and methodologies to advance the project or get further towards the goals. The systems are pretty up to date and capable for what is required. Events and company sponsored team-building things are fun and encourage people to step outside their comfort zone and enjoy the things that have been worked hard for.

    Cons

The corner office know all - even when some of the decisions have cost them millions, countless jobs, and market share. For all their unifying efforts and team-building, decisions are made without consulting or even thinking about who will do the work. Example - someone leaves or is let go, a manager will simply tell someone, they are taking on the additional responsibilities - no discussion, no thought as to how to be divide it, or what are the critical priorities versus what can wait until that position is replaced.

The people in those corner offices treat the HR department as their personal water cooler gossip pool. Nothing you tell HR is sacred, secret or private. Hearing something joked about in a meeting or hallway when you've been assured by a fellow employee they told only HR and you, is deflating, unethical and cruel.

Resistance to change that comes from the masses within is an unwritten chapter in the ATMI book.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Test your middle managers on what their interactions are with their employees. Do this after you have quizzed those same employees. You will find those two results surprisingly different.

You are in a shrinking industry. Letting your old guard managers drive poor personnel decisions with personal bias is a good way to grow a bad reputation but not a good company.
