    I worked at Abcam full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    They offer a lot of trendy benefits- free food, social events, etc. Most of the junior staff are very nice and pleasant to work with. Cool office. Liberal time off policy, even for early career individuals. Great place to learn about the industry or start a career (just don't plan on staying long).

    Cons

    Low salaries with limited growth potential. Act like a 1% annual raise on your already below-market salary is generous. No real direction- lots of rapid strategy changes based on the popular business book of the moment. Extensive favoritism for promotions- many long term, competent employees get passed over in favor of individuals who flatter their bosses the most or for individuals who are dating a member of the management team. Very closed door culture, even though they espouse being open. Employee feedback is welcomed and then almost always completely ignored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't promote incompetent people based on convenience or unjustified favoritism. Be transparent with employees about job performance ( or at least grade them consistently throughout the year, not just super harshly at review time). Act on employee feedback, don't just collect it in an attempt to boost morale. Make managers answer for their own performance. Bring in some outside candidates who know how to plan for long term growth.
