Great bunch of people, inconsistent pace of work

I worked at Acme Packet full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people here are top notch in almost all cases, the code base is ok to excellent. Managers are almost all good people (not always ruthlessly competent but generally great people nonetheless)

People within company make an effort to enjoy life and work.

Tools and development environment was constantly under improvement and by the end they had some pretty slick build/delivery/test processes.

    Cons

Oracle acquisition has created some dark clouds on the horizon, eg: attrition of top talent, added bureaucracy. This may result in change of a lot of the pros listed above, hard to say.

When I was there they were hiring like mad, to the point of excess. There were people hired with literally nothing to do for months. The pace of work also tended to ebb and flow and there were often big slowdowns with little to do. There were never any layoffs to match this so that is a good thing but I wish they were better at project management and hiring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sorry to say but in most cases engineering departments are overstaffed or under worked, depending how you look at it. There are two ways to rectify this, the preferred would be to speed up the approval of new features and platforms.
