The work culture is calm, enjoyable and low stress. Most departments work well together in a team approach. Most employees are not tribal members or Native American. Even though it is a medium size municipal government type employer, Ak-Chin has the feel of a much smaller organization relying on personal interaction to address single and multiple department issues and projects. Benefits are very good with generous vacation and all national holidays (except Columbus day - Native Americans do not celebrate Columbus Day). Pay is comparable to the nearby Phoenix job market. Being an employee is much like being part of a large family - with all the related advantages and issues.
Gossip, rumor and back stabbing are common reasons for terminating employees. Long term employees are let go with no stated reason or chance to resolve misinformation. Who you are and who you are related to greatly effects whether you can keep your job. Management turns over frequently for these reasons. Non management staff are safer. An elected tribal council micro manages departments instead of relying on a professional city manager.
Advice to Management
Government operations have grown beyond the informal (unprofessional) style of management still being used at Ak-Chin. Loss of experienced, technically skilled and long term staff is very expensive and disruptive to continuing department operations. If Ak-Chin had responsible and reasonable upper management, it would be the ideal employer in Arizona.
