Current Employee - Server in Austin, TX
Current Employee - Server in Austin, TX

I have been working at Alamo Drafthouse full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Free movies, food and beverage discounts on your day off, relatively flexible schedules, every time you work you can select from a list of free meals, people think your place of employment is a cool, trendy, Austin type of place. Management is pretty relaxed about comps and voids. More autonomy than most server jobs, while receiving a large amount of support.

    Cons

First off, you cannot begin at Alamo as a server, you must be a food runner for a period of time (manager's discretion) which can last quite awhile if you are a good runner. Prepare to make $300-400 every two weeks while working around 30 hours a week. Once you make it to serving:

Business is very sporadic, as a new employee be prepared to get screwed constantly. You will not make much money initially. Everything is rank based, but rankings are only updated once or twice a year and have nothing more to do with ability or even seniority (after your preliminary period). So kiss up and always make sure to look busy and you might go far in terms of ranking. That being said, business is still very hit or miss. Christmas and summer are usually pretty busy but the rest of the year is dead. Which means: if you get scheduled you will either be cut or you will have to pick up 2-3 theaters at once to make more than $50-60 bucks for a closing shift (think 6pm-2am).

The menu has changed radically in the last year or so, much to the customers constant and vocal dissatisfaction. The support staff is paid a portion of your sales (3.5% - 'tipshare') so they tend not to be overly concerned about speed or accuracy, in terms of preparing (in the case of the service) or delivery (food runners). What this means for you is: endless headache when they drop your food off to the wrong table, exceedingly long ticket times for quick and simple items. Additionally, since the 'tipshare' is calculated and deducted from sales, when you get stiffed (which you will more often than any other restaurant I've ever worked at) you STILL HAVE YOU TO PAY TIPSHARE.

Management is more concerned with keeping the labor percentages low than they are with the actual efficiency of the establishment, so be prepared to pay for runners to deliver food and help clean between movies AND THEN: never have enough of them around which means you're then constantly forced to run food and drinks to other theaters while someone (hopefully) is watching your tables.

(The company has slowly become a homogenous blob of corporate memo's in lieu of actual shift notes/meetings. They will schedule you for special events with no forewarning, where you still make $2.13 an hour but no one orders anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know $2.13 is the minimum wage for regular servers but you might want to consider upping it a bit, maybe yearly, throw us a bone! The company is expanding around the country like wildfire, and the people who are doing all the work aren't really seeing much benefit, while our CEO Tim League gallivants around town with his celebrity friends.
