    Solid if not spectacular

    I worked at American Express full-time for more than 5 years


    -Work/life balance (always out by 6pm, no wknd work)
    -Pay (for the hours)
    -People are friendly
    -Great lateral/upward movement opportunities (can switch roles every 2 years, even geographically)


    -Passive aggressive culture
    -No risk taking; super status quo
    -Not a meritocracy
    -PowerPoint obsessed (crazy obsessed)
    -Too focused on not stepping on the wrong toes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop focusing so much on good looking PowerPoint slides and focus on actually doing things. Also, stop chasing the "cool, shiny" new toy and focus on fundamentals. The people you promote are some of the worst managers I've ever had. They're more obsessed w/ presentation than substance.
