I worked at American Institutes for Research

    Pros

Family-friendly environment; can have flexible schedule, depending on the immediate supervisor; many social activities (great for young people); paid tuition and other professional development opportunities (workshops, conferences, etc.).

    Cons

Not as many opportunities for advancement after certain level. Pretty easy to get from the Assistant to Associate level (eligible in 3 years); then, get a Master's, and you can advance to the Analyst, but after that... not as easy. Saw some people working many years, without promotion to the next level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Peer reviews would be helpful; ask junior staff for feedback more often--they have good insights. Seems (at least some) senior managers are not as interested in being evaluated themselves.
