I worked at Amtrak full-time (more than 5 years)

Excellent pay and benefits. Opportunities for advancement within the company are readily available. Exciting and fast paced work environment. Very rewarding experience especially if you enjoy working with the public and helping people. Coworkers are for the most part great, and you really feel like you're part of a team. Great comradeship.

Long hours, and depending on the job, lots of travel. Very hard to have a life outside of work. Can be very stressful. Also, a lot of jobs are on a "on call" basis meaning you don't have a regular schedule. Can be required to report for duty in as little as two hours from being called. Company is very top heavy management wise. Sometimes it seems like you have more "supervisors" than coworkers. Can be frustrating because a lot of the managers are poorly trained, and don't have any actual experience in the areas that they are managing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees more, including middle management. A sense of security is vital, and it's hard to attain that when you are constantly made to feel like you could be fired at any given second on a whim. Without the hard work and dedication of your employees who do the impossible on a daily basis, you wouldn't have a railroad at all.

    Neutral Outlook
