I worked at Anixter International full-time (More than 8 years)
- Personality wise, the people were the best to work with. - Day one benefits. - Many areas to work in, solving complex problems. - Can work here for 30+ years if that is your wish. - Metra is a block away. - Pension.
- Large ratio of middle management to engineers. - Bonus is yearly, small, and mostly tied to company sales goals. - Low pay, compared to current market. - Skill set of the average employee is below par, due to low pay. - Work from home is almost non existent. - Training is rarely offered. - Large projects are micro managed for time tracking. - Extremely stingy with buying quality laptops for engineers. - Lots of meetings. - Some of the 'old timers' there are clearly just waiting till retirement. - The software development methodology used by business departments is waterfall, and the software group uses agile. This causes a lot of wasted time. - A lot of technical debt, due to years of patchwork.
Advice to Management
- Management and up needs to reevaluate the pay, bonus, and benefits offered to software engineers in order to attract more quality talent. - Get all departments onboard with agile.
