I have been working at Arizona Public Service Company full-time

    Pros

Fair pay and bonuses, benefit package is above average when taken in its entirety. (Great retirement offset by mediocre medical) Strong opportunities for internal movement, good promotion prospects because of aging workforce. Recognition for achievements and good works.

    Cons

Speaking only for Finance and Business Operations (FBO) specifically. To start with there is very high turnover. My best estimate is 15-20% of FBO turns over each year which is unusual for a finance department. This is caused by the following issues: Very inefficient processes. Management pays lip service to process improvement but in practice much of the time it simply throws more man-hours at process rather than fundamentally trying to fix it. Work life balance varies depending on the group. In some groups it is extremely poor with people regularly working nights and frequently working weekends. Very hierarchical compared to a modern company. Senior managers and executives in operations are treated with too much deference. Every whim or feeling is catered to even if it creates a lot of non-value add work for employees. Talent in the department is mixed with some good managers but many who seem to be making it up as they go. Poor training for new employees, sink or swim environment. Lots of political drama at the management level. Oftentimes directives are purely political and have no business value. This creates some frustration with frontline employers.

    Advice to Management

Apply real effort to fixing processes. Replace weak leaders and managers. Develop a scope of work for the department rather than just being the "we do everything" department for operations. Stop encouraging 60-70 hour work weeks at a utility.
