    I have been working at Arkansas DHS full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Enabling families to break the cycle of abuse/neglect over generational spans by assisting them with the skills and knowledge needed to be a successful and stable unit.
    Continuous on the job training
    Flexible hours
    Annual and sick leave start accumulating from day 1 on the job (and during training)
    Educational grants
    Being able to network within your community and across the state with other workers
    Health benefits and retirement

    Cons

    Long hours
    No over-time pay (It is banked as part of your leave time)
    On-call (depending on your position)
    Chaotic environment (at times)
    Traumatic situations for all parties involved (removal of children)
    Being paid less than the federal amount for mileage traveled (42 cents per mile vs. 55 cents per mile)
    Not every county has a "state vehicle" to use so employees are forced to use their personal vehicles

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    To executive staff:
    Listen to your field staff! Those of us in the field have a better understanding of the needs of our clients.
    There is a lack of accountability within some unit supervisors. We do as we are advised by our supervisors.
    Netbooks/laptops with CHRIS access would be helpful to PA's. This would enable us to key in contacts we have with our clients when we are transporting them away from our home county offices.

    FYI: JERRY BERRY is no longer with the division. Cecile Blucker is the Director of DCFS.
