    I worked at AvMed Health Plans full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Accurate paychecks are paid on time. Hours and attendance are unnoticed for exempt individuals and therefore flexible. Building's air conditioning is consistent and temperate.

    Cons

    Senior leadership is disconnected from reality. Their lack of vision and understanding of enterprise risks is staggering. Their heavy reliance on third party firms, from performing fundamental tasks all the way to literally developing the companies strategies, ensures their administrative expenses will remain at a level preventing profitability. There is no sense of urgency; membership has been declining steadily for three years. This culture essentially frustrates those with ideas, those with talent, those with intelligence. Changing AvMed's course is literally impossible at this point.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Senior leadership (particularly Underwriting and Network) needs to step down. Their ideas are either nonexistent or deeply flawed. AvMed needs to right size immediately, shutting down geographic locations outside of Miami, and cutting the workforce by no less than 1/3rd (and by 50% if taking the following step). AvMed needs to disinvest in insuring individuals, businesses and become a TPA for the largest, self-funded municiple accounts. Lastly, a work from home model of employment would encourage higher levels of productivity and would be entirely possible.
