Former Employee - Front Office Work  in  Columbia, MD
Former Employee - Front Office Work in Columbia, MD

I worked at Avid Technology Professionals full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company spends a lot on events (Christmas party, quarterly meetings) so you can be sure you'll have a good time and a decent meal when attending. The company benefits are nice too - a profit sharing plan (when the company sells, but you have options to increase your earning potential), education benefits, equipment/technology money allocation, and a decent healthcare plan are just a few. Plus, if you're a front office employee, they keep the fridge and cabinets stocked with soda and snacks free of charge.

    Cons

The management is nonexistent at best and offensive when it's worse. If you're a contractor, you get a "pass" because you make the company money, and it's more likely that the rules would be bent for you. If you're an overhead employee (the front office), then you'll regularly experience one partner who doesn't take part in business activities at all (will actively hand off work that he is required to do by law), and the other partner will offend you until you're unable to take it anymore (makes verbal threats, is physically aggressive - slamming keyboards, smashed a piece of cake before, etc., will call an "emergency meeting that he's coming to hold in 15 minutes" and then doesn't show up for 4 hours).
Front office staff was also shorted on bonus money for Christmas 2013 because, as it was discovered, partner number two wrote bonus checks for him and his partner (on top of their regular pay as business owners, mind you) to the tune of 50k - money allocated to employees for performance bonuses.
Some of the benefits/perks that contractors enjoy do not transfer the same to front office employees (monies set aside for personal education and growth was spent, unknowingly, on management required training, technology budget is not applied equally), so get clarification on what your benefits are actually going towards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Partner one (the non-participant) - get involved. This is your business too and your partner is destroying it with poor management techniques. He's forced a lot of good people out of your company.
Partner two (the offensive one) - take some sensitivity training and take it seriously. The way you manage is a dictatorship, and makes you appear a tyrant. Why you're even surprised that this is the feedback you continually receive from employees, I'll never understand.
