    Pros

Experience a wide range of business activities across the globe. Great training opportunities. Most people are friendly and trustworthy. Great work-life balance.

    Cons

Additional layers of senior management are created for the old boys network and filled by well-spoken yes-men with limited knowledge or experience, and who do not follow policies..These positions are mostly not advertised, filled by prior arrangement, and therefore impose a glass ceiling for internal employees. Even the top performers have little or no prospects of career advancement, complete with non-existing salary increases or bonuses. As a result the better performers leave in large numbers, and the weak ones with limited knowledge and poor performance stay behind.

    Advice to Management

Get a HR policy in place which mandates advertising all jobs both internally and externally, with appointment based on merit, and with a preference for appointing internal candidates. HR should compile a hotlist of high performing internal candidates who are looking for internal career advancement, and focus on this hotlist prior to inviting external candidates. If no career progression has been made in 2 years, HR should intervene and the manager should explain. Honestly, after 7 years of being one of your highest rated employees, but with no career advancement, I have now given up hope.
