I worked at Basic American Foods full-time (More than 8 years)
Wages and benefits for hourly employees are relatively good for the geographical area. Compensation and benefits for salaried employees compare with other industries in the area. Profit sharing is available for those on a salary as well, although the last few years have not been nearly as good as they once were. Plants are shut down at Christmas for two or three days, allowing all employees the opportunity to be with loved ones.
Hourly production employees have no work/life balance. 7 day rotating shifts allow for limited time off between rotations. Once a month they get 4 days in a row off. This includes the one and only weekend they are able to spend with their families. Christmas is the only holiday that production employees get off. Salaried employees get all the holidays off. This does not promote a feeling of equality among employees. Working conditions and enough staff to perform the necessary tasks should be addressed and improved in all the plants. Human Resources provided very little follow through for the employees. They would tell employees what they wanted to hear without helping solve problems. The politics at Basic American Foods is the worst I've experienced in my career. I saw qualified employees be passed over for opportunities over and over again. Skill and ability seemed to be secondary considerations to who your friends in Human Resources were when it came to advancement opportunities.
Advice to Management
Listen closely to what front line employees have to say, then take action to make things better. Do not continue providing lip service simply to placate the employees. BAF was once a good place for a career; employees took pride in the products they produced and had a lot of trust in the company. That culture was lost when reductions in force took place. Everything became all about the negative and nothing about the positive. More time is spent trying to find the bad in employees than looking for the good and building them up. The best way to start changing the culture back to what it once was is by having enough production staff in the plants. Monday through Friday support staff are great, but additional front line production employees are what is needed most. Providing more of a balance between life and work can be achieved by doing away with the 7 day rotation. Numerous options were proposed but always disregarded as being to expensive. I think the real reason was someone's power trip. Step out of the box and at least try something different.
