    I have been working at Bechtel Marine Propulsion full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Stable job environment. Important national security mission which most people value and appreciate. Interesting work. Good people who honestly care about the work and mission.

    Cons

    Salaries and benefits are below industry standards. Raises are poor, no bonuses, no pension for new hires. Poor morale and getting worse. Personal cell phones are not allowed. Attracting and retaining top talent has become more difficult and turnover has increased. Work environment has become suffocating due to increase in compliance and oversight making it difficult to get work done unless it is the top priority. Planning, process, and project management are valued over productivity and quality. Government oversight is stifling, tensions are high and trust is low. Future is unclear and budgets are uncertain. Many managers lack technical experience in areas that they manage. Promotions don't always go to most qualified. Work is managed through schedules which are often artificial and meaningless. Poor performance is tolerated while significant contributions are poorly rewarded. Maintaining professional contacts and/or authoring publications is very difficult and not actively encouraged. Unlike previous corporate parents (GE, Lockheed/Martin), Bechtel does not appear to be an advocate for employees. Employee concerns often go unanswered or unresolved. Employees are unrepresented and left out of negotiations with government over benefits and working conditions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Regain and act according to the values and principles that made the Program a success or risk an unrecoverable loss in capability and credibility. Put people first and advocate for their benefit.
