I worked at Belo full-time (more than an year)

The benefits are very good, and it's conveniently located near public transportation, which is very rare in this area. Work/life balance is pretty good, and people aren't expected to work unpaid overtime. They also support continuous education and will reimburse you for relevant classes at local schools. Salaries are comparable to other media companies in the area.

I left by my own will, but during the short time I was there, I saw about five people get fired from my department of about 30-40 people, and more were fired after I left. All were considered dedicated, high performers and were completely caught off guard by being fired. In every case, it came out of the blue from HR, with no warning, and the senior management not only apologized to the person being fired and took their side, but said that the firing was out of their control and offered to give positive references for future jobs. I'm not sure if this is Belo's way of conducting layoffs in order to replace more experienced workers with cheaper ones, but it was very, very strange.

In each case, we were also told not to discuss the recent firing, which was probably counterproductive. If there were some valid reason, other employees should know about it, because the person being fired clearly didn't know what it was, so it's possible others would make the same mistakes.
