This company offers wonderful development opportunities for those people who are self-starters and willing to take initiative. I have worked at a number of consulting companies over my career and the vast majority of negativity in the comments below come from people with very limited experience in professional services firms. With Best Practices, employees have amazing flexibility to self-direct their careers and very rapidly take the lead on initiatives taking on as much responsibility they can handle. They offer training classes all the time, taught but colleagues, and it is a very collegial atmosphere. Additionally, other consulting companies can be sweat shops (e.g., 70-100 hrs/week including holidays and weekends), with substantial burnout of their employees, and high turnover. Best Practices has a fantastic quality of life with very little travel, solid pay, amazing flexibility on work hours and pace of work, with low overall turnover.

Like any small to medium sized company, this one has growing pains as well. One of the challenges is having people focus on only one thing. Each individual must be accountable for contributing to the success of the firm not only through their big research projects, but also through contributions of supporting functions to which they are assigned. Some of these might include supporting marketing pieces, business development, conferences or other development activities, as well as client support. This is very typical of professional services firms and a huge part of the development opportunities, getting to experience multiple areas of responsibility. It is best that potential applicants go in with eyes open that they are going to have to divide their time a bit, but back in return experience. Many in the industry find this variety of work a compelling reason to move into professional services because it keeps the work varied and continuous, The other challenge is that this is a smaller firm than the "Big 4" accountancies with substantially less resources to perform technical development and use of discretionary budgets. So there are limits to how much additional work can be performed on an exploratory basis and pressure is always to make ideas commercialized as quickly as possible, This can limit the exploration of some product or service development spending. However, the creative and innovative employees in the past have been to get around this through tenacity and personal ownership. For small to mid-sized companies, as is the case with BPLLC, employees make the difference and need to take the lead on development opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Work on breaking down perceptions of front line staff, and increase overall transparency so people can see what a great place this is to work.
