    I have been working at Big Heart Pet Brands full-time (less than an year)


    Genuine passion for pets and pet parents and strong products serving as a backbone for success. Casual office environment with a good location in Pittsburgh. Great, friendly people who actually collaborate and support one another, while still expecting high performance and results. Strong desire to innovate and get out from under the old Del Monte "business as usual" mentality. Significant investment back into the business for new systems, equipment, etc. Opportunities to advance and cross-train are abundant. Work life balance is superb; there is a definite commitment to getting out of the office at a decent hour and disconnecting every day (and Summer Hours on Fridays). I never worked for Del Monte, but it definitely sounds like Big Heart has made a lot of improvements vs. the "bad old days." Leaders are approachable and take the time to consider ideas or even just shoot the breeze.


    Training is weak to non-existent. Many systems to keep track of, without a unifying vision or platform (some hope on the way there with launches planned for 2015 but we'll see). NPD and product refreshes are often done in a vacuum, sometimes resulting in re-work and missed opportunities. Innovation is somewhat siloed into certain groups, rather than being truly cross-functional. Nearly every team is short-staffed and could use more headcount. HQ in San Francisco and major office in Pittsburgh means there's some balancing required between the time zones. Meetings lack discipline; too many are set up as 1 hour recurring weekly but really only need an hour a month or an emailed status update. Natural Balance business unit is the Wild West.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue the re-investment and look at adding resources (people) to key functions such as project managers and continuous improvement specialists. Knock down the walls between "innovation" items and existing/basic items and let the teams cross-pollinate. Look to improve on-boarding by developing more robust "first 90 days" checklists, mentorships, and similar programs to set your new hires up for success and ingrain the new culture.
