Impossible to move up the ladder for field service engineers unless you are willing to move to California.

Current Employee - Field Service Engineer

I have been working at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (more than 5 years)

work with a great group of people. pretty good benefit package. not bad work/family balance most of the time.

Pay scale is 10-15k below industry. HR has a performance matrix for field service engineers that makes it virtually impossible to excel. you are punished for not getting to a site within 12 hours even if you are working at another ETC. part availability severely hampers the ability of the engineers to fix machines in a timely manner. Decision making and changes crawl at a snails pace. upper management does things the way they have always been done. you are judged solely on numbers and how they look on paper to upper management. No raise last year for anyone in CDG and not looking good for this year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

take some risks. admit when something does not work and find a solution. don't try to make what we have work when we have repeatedly proven it will never work. If pay does not increase there will be a mass exodus of service engineers in the near future! have spoken to many guys looking for another opportunity.
