I worked at Biozentrum University of Basel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A very multicultural atmosphere. Nice and helpful personel, specially great great secretaries. It's located in Basel, the Swiss center for pharma and chemistry industry. For a short time it's good, but please not longer. Relatively good infrustructure, specially BC2 computer cluster systems.

    Cons

No control over the group leaders, working with some of professors here is not so pleasing, if not so much close to mental tourchering. I'm so sorry, but why on earth no one looks after poor PhD and Postdoc students that the professors allow themselves to treat them so badly.
Almost all communications and documents (e.g., work contract) is in German.
University of Basel in general has a very very bad website! Biozentrum website has improved a lot, actually.
Old school of biology research, except a few groups it's mainly at the genetics level. The research style is kept almost intact from 80s or 90s.
Apart from PhD representatives who organize every once in a while some career talks, the university and biozentrum offer no help, advice, or facility for the career advancement.
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics groups are quite isolated, even physically separated from the rest of groups.
URZ, which maintains the IT infrustructure of BZ, sometimes reminisces me of stone age (somehow similar to the main theme of research here). Maybe the TV series "The IT Crowd" describes it better than me.
Except for a very few courses, many courses here are really low standard. It's good that you pass them easily, but often feels like a joke. For example, you pass a course merely by attending ~85% of the sessions and try to not fall sleep.
Very cold and dead atmosphere, in PhD or Postdoc parties only a few people would show up, even though the beer and other drinks are free! For instance, in the last Easter party, although it was very well organized, only a handful has shown up. On the contrary, other institute here like FMI show a more vibrant atmosphere, people more actively socialize together.
The salary for postdoc is on average lower than the other research institute in Switzerland and also even Basel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to watch more carefully the PIs here, mainy students are suffering! In the end, students and postdocs are also human!
Please change the contracts, or maybe just supply them with an informal english version. Not so hard, is it?
I know you don't like much new way of doing biology, with all these bioinformaticians and computer stuff, but maybe that's not so bad if you want to keep yourself up-to-date.
