American Horror Story: Bloomingdale's Chevy Chase

Former Employee - Sales Associate  in  Chevy Chase, MD
Former Employee - Sales Associate in Chevy Chase, MD

I worked at Bloomingdale's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Promised an enriching and fulfilling "own your own business" model.
-You're able to create relationships with clients that are useful in life.
-Experience with a few sought after and interesting brands.
-Representatives from brands visit with brand knowledge, which is very exciting.
    -Free-roaming sales floor atmosphere.

    Cons

-Nearly everything promised to you with your job offer is a complete lie. The system is rigged against you in multiple departments throughout the store by the management. If you are not from the White Flint location, or are one of the tenured associates with endless clientele, you will be treated and spoken to like utter garbage by all levels of management, even in front of your clients.
-You will not make nearly the money promised to you or you deserve, especially if you work hard. Management will rig the system by allowing specific sales people to work in high price point areas without cleaning the space and delegate you to low price point areas while making you clean all day, even after your co-workers.
-You essentially work for Macy's with a different name on the front, so there's a sale every weekend. Good luck making your numbers selling tops that are 40% then 30% off of that and then 20% off of that.
-The typical customer has been fed by this company that they deserve these sales, so they will treat you like they're at Marshall's. Because you are.
-the Draw vs. Commission system is also a set-up by corporate to pay you as little as possible and make it seem like it's your fault. How can you compete when forced to clean after your co-workers all day?
-Management must have all been trained at McDonald's or something. You'll stay continually surprised that you're supposed to believe you work at a high-end store with how you're spoken to. I've never met a more condescending, wretched group of unhappy people than the management of this store.
-The stock itself is an unorganized mess. Stock rooms are perpetually hazardous and the merchandizing rarely makes sense. The brand selection here is abysmal, and continued to get worse and worse during my time with the company.
-The HR dept. here is a nightmare. If hired, use and learn about your union, you'll need it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gut all levels of management from this store, from the top down. All need replaced with compassionate, personable, professional people.
