I worked at Bloomingdale's full-time (more than an year)

the customers made the experience pleasant; they made it easy to clientelle and build a relationship with them that felt like friendships that your day depends on to be good while youre at work. also, being able to work close with the visual merchandising team to ensure optimal placement of products which attracted more customers to my area to shop.

the other associates and management are way too uptight about things. they ask that we're friendly with customers which is the obvious, but friendly to them is in the customers face as long as they're in our area which is creepy and obnoxious. there is no room for creatively expressing your personal style even if it is work appropiate & is their required all black outfit, they wont say anything if you are in b-style but just know you will get the looks and annoying little judgemental questions and statements. I was even asked to stand in my stock room during a visit from Mr. Gould by Kathy & Bette because I wore high waisted pants.. ridiculous right? Kathy and Bette are super judgemental. Kathy is queen of the weird looks and uncalled for questions. Bette just has insecurity issues I guess, she does the 'look' too and says things like 'change those earrings, they're not appropiate', yet they'd be earrings I purchased in store, and how inappropiate can earrings be if they're not giant doorknockers or hoops? too gold maybe? this was always uncomfortable which forced me to end up going to a competing company to work. also, they promise growth, but there is none. I was excited about this, but there were associates around me who were turning into fossils because they've been there so long and they've gotten their titles changed multiple times but the job they've been doing from day one is the job they remain doing. Ive been working for a competing company for about almost a year and Im already being offered better opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

let people be who they are, you hired them for a reason. and their customers love them for who they are. let them be.
