    I worked at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    I really enjoyed working for BCBSM. They have great benefits, competitive compensation (in sales and marketing) and really care about their employees. They have put a lot of time, effort and money into developing great solutions for customers. Very ethical company with a great sense of community involvement and responsibility.

    Cons

    Work life balance is a big issue for a good part of the year, but that is the nature of the insurance industry. They are also typically slow to react to market changes. The stress of the job and the long hours can often create an unhappy work environment. If you don't like internal meetings and conference calls filling your schedule, this is not the company for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    A lot of emphasis is put on interaction between managers/directors and their staff, yet the managers and directors seem to be constantly involved in internal meetings that interferes with this objective. I definitely recommend an evaluation of this practice. The need for the meetings seems to be perpetuated by the fact that people don't respond timely to requests from internal teammates, but when you ask why they haven't responded, it's because they have been in internal meetings or on calls for the last several days. This just isn't the way to meet customer needs in an efficient manner.
