I have been working at Blue Shield Of California

    Pros

There are good people that mean well and who are often motivated by the company's glowing mission statement to provide access to affordable health care for all Californians.
Decent salaries. Good paid time off benefits. Decent 401k.
Hard working front line people. Decent middle-management.

    Cons

Leadership is often incompetent and is disconnected from the reality of running the day to day operations. Leadership is too dependent on consultants and often turns what should be fairly simple projects into complicated ones that are riddled with cost overruns and often don't get completed. There is little accountability in management. Something that seems endemic in the health insurance industry is present here as well - a lack of vision and the unwillingness to take risks. Nothing really bold ever happens. Health insurance companies are reaping the benefits of health care reform - look at their earning statements. Now is the time they could be investing in really partnering with medical providers to make coverage more affordable. But here and at most companies, satisfaction with the status quo (highly compensated execs) keeps things static.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step outside the health insurance model that has existed for so long. Stop worrying about "managing care" and strengthen the bond between patients and the provider community by opening broader networks - not by making them ever narrower and limiting choices. Be bold and make your company transparent - push for initiatives that shed light on the true costs of health care. Get out of the shadows and into the light. You mean well and you talk a lot about doing the right thing. Try doing it and you just might succeed.
