Current Employee - IT Technical Lead in San Francisco, CA
Current Employee - IT Technical Lead in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Job flexibility is very good and most of the managers very accommodating.
Work from home option for 2 or more days as long as things are completed on schedule.
Work life balance is very good for majority of times.
Pay is not the greatest, but can be considered above par in IT.

    Cons

Absolutely no collaborative atmosphere and everyone works in Silos.
Most of the times your middle management are non-technical and most likely moved from customer service.
Too much dependency on Vendors for core work and employees are treated like worse than them. Management talks about retaining core work with employees, but hasn't happened in last 1.5 years.
Too many meetings and very little comes out of it. Also there is a tendency to shun ownership and try to pass it on to someone else.
Everyone is a Manager and very little actual work is done. For IT division this small, too many VP, Directors and Managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees and provide them a path to use the skills that they are hired for.
Provide a collaborative atmosphere for employees to work together and remove distrust.
Don't use cheap tricks like cutting carryover PTO to gain short term financial results.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
