Cannot squeeze truck, task, and customer service out of the tiny salary budget.

I have been working at Books-A-Million (more than an year)

    Pros

Awesome and amazing co-workers. Book check out is a great perk. Discount is okay. Most of the customers are wonderful.

    Cons

Never enough staffing. Managers are stressed out. Manager schedule destroys any possibility of a normal family life. Truck hours, task hours, comp hours are not included in the salary budget. Repairs take forever or are just ignored. Everyone has too much on their plate. Training is laughable. The GM thinks everyone is after her job. As a result she refuses to delegate anything, yet blames others when tasks aren't done. Schedules are out two days before you have to work them, and they still get revised at least twice in the week without a courtesy call.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let there be shifts. Two day managers and two night managers. A day shift and a night shift. Maybe some people who float both. People have lives. We make plans around the work schedules. You can't just change them, especially without asking if we're available. The flexible shift allows for weekly hours to be cut when associates aren't meeting goals, but training and discipline would be a much more effective way to improve metrics. Set schedules would allow students time to study, family heads time to cook and clean, and those who need to work multiple jobs a better availability. Stop following the ways of Wal-Mart and become a company that lifts up their workers and betters America. Book lovers are amazing people. You attract unique and passionate people. Stop crushing their spirits.
