Lots of bureaucracy, but organization has some truly great people working in it.

Former Employee - Health Care Provider in Boston, MA

I worked at Boston Public Health Commission full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Benefits okay, pension incentivizes longer tenure
    -Mission-based work
    -Some stellar co-workers
    -Supportive supervisor
-Worked with amazing clients in the community
-Organization has required Racial Justice and Health Equity training, a must for anyone working in the field
    -Great work-life balance

    Cons

-Pay is very low for industry standard, despite Union presence
-Abusive and unethical employees are sometimes allowed to stay on for years, with their behavior excused or swept under the rug
-So much bureaucracy, resulting in tons of paperwork and unnecessary meetings
-Lots of top-down pressure from upper management players who don't understand the programs they are running, with threats of budget cuts. Often there was hearsay regarding BOHC's director's opinion towards program, with no direct input from her at meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management- take the time to listen to those who are doing the direct work. Hopefully new executive director will be a positive new asset!
