    I worked at Bristol City Council for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Once you're in, it's pretty impossible to get out. This means you have security, and the sickness, maternity, and pension benefits are pretty unparalleled. It's a large employer, so in theory there's plenty of scope to move around, but this is often more of a lip service thing than reality. You are well-protected as a worker on the whole, and the payscales are better than in the third sector. There are some really dedicated, knowledgeable people working here, and if you're lucky enough to meet one, you can learn an awful lot. It's fulfilling, on the whole, to serve the people of Bristol and to see improvement in people's lives and public services.

    Cons

    A lot of the higher echelons got there by time served and so are just eking out their existence until retirement. Leadership can be dogmatic and ignore realities of people's needs (both service users and workers). There are countless tales of cover-ups - it's well known that certain people are protected, as they make such shockingly awful decisions it's amazing they're still in post. If you stay here for long (I managed seven years) you might be lucky enough to experience something like this first-hand. A lack of ambition is standard for everyone at BG12 and below - no-one wants to hear what you think, anyway, so just get on with the job, and if you do come up with anything innovative, it's also standard for your manager to nick your idea and pass it off as their own, to great applause from service managers, etc. Morale amongst staff is generally low, and initiatives to improve matters are generally expensive, yield low-value results and lead to redundancies. Training and personal growth used to be a big draw for working for a local authority, but there is very little opportunity now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    If you're going to consult people in your organisation, make sure you address them directly - don't go via service managers, service directors etc. You won't get a true answer as people are leant on heavily. You have no idea how much talent you have in your organisation going to waste. I now work for a successful third sector organisation that makes sure it utilises the skills and talents people have. BCC couldn't care less about cross-matching skills and abilities, and in order to thrive in the future, it will need to wake up.
