I have been working at CAPSLO full-time

    Pros

My department (in Central Admin) has great leadership. Individual benefits are exceptional for full time employees. Aside from the standard two weeks vacation, holidays and sick days allotment per year; medical benefits [Anthem PPO] are 100% company paid for the employee. Not cost effective if you need to put your family on the plan [HMO option is available, but still pricey compared to others]. Biggest benefit is the 403b retirement plan. Employer match is 60%, and you are 100% vested at inception. Base pay low for workload/experience required, but more than industry standard considering you are working for a non-profit and factoring in the benefits package.

    Cons

Not all departments/programs are run the same, and not all program leaders are created equal. Feels like organization is bigger than infrastructure can handle. I've heard some departments are quite difficult to work in due to both extremes in leadership-poor program leadership on one end, extreme micromanagement on the other. Co-workers and management really can define how successful you are at your job.

    Advice to Management

Keep working on infrastructure and communication-but please continue to work on systems you have put in place to make them more functional. For example: changing to Google Mail so that every employee would have access to email and the directory sounds good in theory...but many of the people that didn't have access previously with Microsoft Office, still don't have access. Particularly in child care centers, new policies/information are emailed out, teacher's never see them because they have no access, then are told they should know about them, because they are on email and the intranet. Not to mention the fact that there are a lot of employees that aren't particularly comfortable in English or with using computers to begin with. I made the mistake of assuming a maintenance guy at one of the centers had email access, because he had an email address-and sent several emails on a subject over the course of a week before I contacted his area manager to find out 1) he doesn't have computer access, and 2) he doesn't do English. Forcing an email address on someone like that under the guise of "improving communication" isn't helpful; and counting the move to Google Mail a success because so many more employees have email addresses is misleading.
