Former Employee - Shift Supervisor in Ann Arbor, MI

I worked at CVS Health part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great opportunities. Despite having only public service experience, after a successful interview I started as a shift manager and it was made clear that advancement was possible. From all I've seen that's true, but they'll make you work for it. But if you're willing to work hard and are a self-starter, you're bound to get noticed. Everyone is incredibly dependent on their subordinates, with only two (and sometimes one) person running a store. This has the effect of making things great or awful depending on the particular store you work in. In my case, the people were excellent to work on a personal level.

    Cons

However, there's a flip side. Work/life balance is often nonexistent. If someone calls in - and they will - you will take their shift, even if that means another 5 or 6 hours. It's nearly always a skeleton crew and calling for help from other stores is impossible because they're as understaffed as you. The dependence on your shift partner can mean you get nothing done and, with the complete lack of training most employees get, you can almost guarantee most of your shifts will be solo. Even if you happen to get the one great cashier on your team there's always more to do. In addition to being held over and working 12-hour shifts, you're put into situations in which you're compelled to work off-the-clock to get stuff done. Keep in mind, I was "part time," with a preference for 25-30 hours a week. Suffice it to say that rarely happened. But again, this is all dependent on the store. Some stores are downright lazy and I'm sure the managers of those stores would be baffled to hear this. But if you get into a store with standards, prepare to work long and hard, feeling like you're never doing enough. Commensurate compensation? Not likely. If there is at least one thing I can say to justify it, at least you know the store managers are suffering as much as you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You've done an excellent job marketing yourselves to health-conscious folks with your move away from tobacco products. Just remember: stress is a health risk too. Consider allocating more hours to training, or more hours in general.
