I have been working at Calstrs full-time (More than 8 years)
I underestimate the beauty of CalSTRS, until I visit other state buildings. This building opened in 2009, the cubicles are medium size with lower partitions to promote a modern open feel. The people are very friendly and helpful, including the CEO & other execs. - Nice cafe with a Peet's Coffee - Many free on campus training classes - Promotional opportunities; most departments prefer to promote from within (if you meet the CalHR job qualifications) - Located on the Sacramento River & Riverwalk Trail - Free modern gym with a yoga/ exercise & locker room - parking is around 45.00, which is cheaper than most offices in the downtown area - It doesn't fit the sloppy lazy state worker stereotype. Most people dress business casual. Some in suits, depending on the business area you work in. - Occasionally you'll see almost famous people like Al Gore.
Like with other jobs, especially state jobs, there can be nepotism. Overtime you'll realize how many people are related to other people, in some type of way. You still have to pass an exam & meet minimum qualifications, but with so many people trying to get state jobs, a good word from an inside source seems to go a long way.
