Former Intern - Operations Analyst in Richmond, VA
Former Intern - Operations Analyst in Richmond, VA

I worked at Capital One as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great experience for young professionals. You really get thrown right into a project team with the expectation to actually contribute meaningful work. The summer intern class involves a lot of team-building and activities such as happy hours and opportunities to meet many senior employees. Competitive pay.

    Cons

All of the stuff they do is completely centered around them trying to make you accept an offer after the summer. There were tons of executive speakers that basically all gave the same message "Capital One is the bank of the future." These speakers pulled you away from project teams a lot, and this has an impact on your relationship with your manager and other full-time employees.
It took me awhile to understand exactly what I was doing, seeing as I was an engineering major working at a bank, but I felt like I got up to speed as quickly as anyone. The problem was my manager was horrible at working with me, hardly showed me what to do, and we never had a good relationship. During our reviews though, he made it seem like everything was going well. Then during the end-of-summer review he seemed like he was glad to get rid of me, I didn't receive an offer, and was never told why. When I asked him exactly why he reviewed me so poorly, I got no answer.
Essentially, hope you get on a good team with a supportive manager, or else it doesn't matter what impact you make, all that matters is your manager's review.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on placing interns with manager's who actually will work with their interns. Interns are there for only 10 weeks, so your manager has to be involved sooner. Manager's also need to tell their interns when they are doing something wrong, or could improve in some aspects. Still never got an answer as to where I did poorly...
