I worked at Capitol Region Education Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

CREC Magnet Schools spend a lot of money on buildings, students, and materials.Their pay is generally very competitive, and they have a lot of opportunities to receive free/cheap trainings/professional development. CREC Magnet Schools serve white suburban students well.

    Cons

    - Low-quality services for special education students. CREC Magnet School refuse to provide better services for special education students, waiting on sending districts to provide that funding. This means it is not uncommon to see a student with Autism engaging in severe behavior and no CREC service providers are trained to intervene. It is not uncommon to see students with disabilities in the back of the classroom. There is a culture in CREC Magnet Schools to do whatever you have to do to get a student with a disability out placed if their behavior is in any way an inconvenience to the teacher, staff, or principal. - Low-quality services for minority students. If you suspect you or your child are being treated differently based on race or zip code, you're not crazy. It is not uncommon to see African American students removed from the classroom for minor infractions (i.e., for doing the same thing their white peers are doing). If you report improper discipline, restraint, or seclusion to CREC Magnet School administrators, nothing will be done. Responsibility/blame will continue to be placed on the student/family despite mistreatment. - High levels of restraint and seclusion that go undocumented.

    Advice to Management

Spend less on the fancy stuff and put money toward improved special education services and train school staff on the nuances of urban education.
