I worked at CarMax full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The company has a very strict way of doing things which makes it pretty black and white. There isn't much room to question policies or procedures, so you will either get it right or you wont. Each department has a training program specific to the tasks of that position and it is all within the CarMax computer programs so you can go at your own speed for the most part. They are big on teamwork and do several things for the community. You do get a discount on cars and some services. Most of the managers are always available to help you no matter which department you work in. The workflow is pretty repetitive, as they have a good system in place that works for them.

    Cons

It feels very corporate. Unless you are one of the managers of an important department, you will be just a number. The store is opened until 9pm and you are expected to stay until the last customer is gone so you can do closing tasks. If a customer walks in at 8:55 and wants to take a test drive, expect to stay late. It seems like all of the managers/sales consultants just want to hit their needed number of sales, so they don't mind keeping everyone else late (even those not making commission). They also have an excessive amount of meetings where they will provide you with feedback and expect you to do the same. If you are a part-time employee, this can be overwhelming. The company is all about bettering the employees, but there isn't much room to quickly move up within the company if that's your plan. I can only speak for Business Office but for the work done, employees should be paid more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should care less about the statistics and more about being personable. Everyone constantly watches the numbers and the status of the company when they should be taking time to make personal connections with their employees. Employees do not stay long, and there is a large amount of turnover because people want to feel like they mean something to their bosses.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
