I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Career Development - There are a lot of opportunities for career development.
Skill Development - As an engineer, you'll use and develop technical skills.
Compensations - The pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

Career Development - While there are a lot of opportunities, it can often take a while to move up in your position.
Management - There are too many layers of management. Higher level management is very disconnected from what's happening at the lower levels.
Financial Concerns - Management is very focused on improving quarterly returns, and is often short-sighted in their decisions. This company hasn't been around for a long time by thinking quarter to quarter.
Location - Many of the jobs are based in Peoria, which is not a terrible city to live in. However, Caterpillar is by far the largest employer here. It makes things difficult when the largest employer is town is not doing well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Caterpillar is a cyclical company. Management needs to recognize that the time to develop new machines often exceeds to rise in an economic cycle. Often new development programs will be funded during an economic boom, and then cut during an economic downturn. Management seems to focus only on the R&D impact to quarterly returns, rather than the emotional cost to the employees.
