Current Employee - Project Manager in Scotts Valley, CA

I have been working at Central California Alliance for Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Service oriented mission to provide the disadvantaged with medical insurance. Good PTO benefits. Staff are friendly. Provides a gym onsite in each location (Scotts Valley being largest). Fruit provided for free and staff are encouraged to take a break and work out during the day. Project work can be challenging both in scope and complexity. Medi-Cal is a big money-maker which means the Alliance will do well for years to come.

    Cons

Outside of the IT and BAU departments, the project management program is generally immature. This is primarily due to a stringent Operations Department which seems more concerned with meetings and inflexible schedules ("we support others therefore must be here exactly at 8, take lunch only from 12-1 and must leave exactly at 5). Project managers working within this section are treated less as professionals and more as tools to manipulate. There is little comprehension let alone following of basic Agile or waterfall methodologies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move the entire project management organization under the CIO where there are people who understand how to take care of staff. Treat staff as professionals who can manage their time according to the needs of the projects versus the clock on the wall. Reduce and focus meetings on needs, issues and risks.
