    I have been working at Centrica full-time (more than 5 years)


    Good overall benefits package, reasonable salary if you negotiate very hard upon joining. The staff restaurant is better than it was. Mostly a 9-5 culture, no expectations of 'long hours' or weekend working. Home working is possible, at least part of the week.


    Incredibly political - pretends to be a meritocracy but isn't. Career progress depends on how good you are at brown nosing senior management - what you actually do counts for nothing. If you have a management job in the IS area your life will become a living nightmare of mind boggling processes, cost estimates, metrics, micromanagement and being held to account for the slightest deviation from the norm. Even filling in timesheets is becoming impossible as you cannot charge projects more than agreed but you are also not allowed to book time to BAU cost codes.

    Senior management is trying to find reasons to initiate a redundancy programme, hence the new emphasis on micromanagement. The metrics are designed to show that there are too many middle and junior managers who are not productive enough and need to be cut. This is plainly obvious for all to see. The paranoid atmosphere, redolent of fear and backstabbing, is reminiscent of East Germany before the fall of the Berlin wall. It's a terrible shame - when I joined 5 years ago the IS area of the company was vibrant and fun to work for, but then a new CIO was brought in to make cuts and that's when it all went wrong. The future doesn't look good either, as political pressure to keep fuel prices low will inevitably mean further cuts and redundancies.

    Let people do their jobs and focus on delivering, instead of wasting time on pointless processes which waste time and detract from the objectives of our roles.
