Former Employee - Teacher in Collegeville, PA

I worked at Children Of America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Management was usually friendly

About half the staff was professional and courteous

    Good starting salary

    Large classrooms

    Good supply of crafting materials

    Cons

    No benefits

    Minimal raises

Too many students in classrooms for children over two years old

    Cattiness/gossip were condoned

    Management showed favoritism among staff

Employees are generally unable to afford to send own children to school here

Teachers were expected to spend their own money on supplies to meet corporate issued lesson plan requirements

Teachers were not paid for time spent creating lesson plans, organizing and writing child portfolios, writing state mandated CSRs- these were to be done on a teacher's own time

Staff was generally unprofessional: frequently texting, improper dress code, cattiness, gossip, and some bullying. Management often disregarded concerns that staff attempted to address

Management did not check in with or observe teachers as they worked

Food served to children was very poor quality. The tight food budget was corporate controlled. Fruit and vegetables came shipped in dusty cans; some fruit was in heavy, sugary syrup; half of a large insect was once found in the canned vegetables- when reported corporate office did nothing to make menu changes; the budget was later tightened and portions were so heavily controlled that children had no opportunity for additional servings. The only fresh food ever served was bananas. Everything else was canned or frozen. Most entrees were processed meat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
