I have been working at City of Blair, Nebraska full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people that work here are great, being friendly and knowledgeable. Most members of the city council are responsible and genuine. The tools used for your job are provided, in most cases, but you are also allowed to bring some of your own, depending on the position. We are provided health insurance coverage and are offered family coverage, too. Also, our retirement plans (401k, 457) are pretty good.

    Cons

The city administrator is deceitful. During salary negotiations after 4-5 years of no real raises (between 1%-2% for that time), administrator used a comparison to another city for positions that didn't even exist for that city. When we asked if he had gotten the salary information from there, he told us he had spoken to a member of that Police Department. The city he compared us to didn't even have a Police Department and he altered the numbers he supposedly had gotten from other departments to make his offering of raises to look better. During the past 4-5 years, other departments in our area have received consistent raises of better than 3.5%, while we have only received raises of 2% or less, except for one year of 2.75%. The salary differentials between other comparable departments and us have grown dramatically. We now make over $5 per hour less than other departments and departments who are in more rural areas or much smaller are now making very similar salaries to us. Also, our health insurance benefits have become worse over the last 5 years. We have a $3500 deductible per person/$7000 for employee/spouse and pay over $500 per month for this coverage. Because of the issues I've outlined here, we've recently lost almost 20% of our workforce, including officers with 13, 13, and 7 years of experience. They've moved to the private sector and seen their salaries increase dramatically- not here, though. We're still making wages comparable to 2002, while everyone around us has moved forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would recommend open and honesty communication, rather than lies and deceit.
