Former Employee - Administrative Specialist in Flagstaff, AZ

I worked at City of Flagstaff full-time (more than 3 years)

Regular 8 - 5 work hours; okay benefits; downtown location is attractive; some very friendly, dedicated, hardworking staff (mostly middle mgt and below)

Very expensive community to live in at low pay; few opportunities for advancement; leadership is rigid, inaccessible and removed from ground level staff; no mistake is too inconsequential for a lecture; many in upper mgt do not know how to acknowledge what they don't know and seek the input of other staff with relevant experience and expertise. Staff who have done great work have been passed over for promotion in favor of people from outside the community. Bad behavior is tolerated and relationships seem to be more valued that competence, integrity and honesty. Staff are routinely thrown under the bus for the sake of politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to listening to the people doing the work; get over your egos and learn to admit what you don't know and give individuals with the expertise the opportunity to contribute and shine. Invest in your staff so that they feel valued and part of the big picture - you'd be surprised the loyalty that generates from people who are underpaid. A thank you for your efforts under an impossible situation would have been really nice.
