I worked at City of Hope full-time (more than 8 years)

    - Depending on where you work it can be a great experience. The mission is great and there are many people who really care about their work and what they do. Even when you are not in direct patient care, there are opportunities that make you feel like you are making a difference.
    - The campus is beautiful and some of the newer buildings are really nice to work in.
    - Fairly flexible schedule in most of the departments I have worked in.

    - Politics and poor management. While there are some departments where there are good managers, there are many which don't. I have personally experienced management with very preferential hiring and treatment of employees that are not based on skill (race and gender usually).

    - Preferential treatment by executives for their favorite employees and projects instead of what is good for the company and the mission. This causes a great deal of politician strife between groups, discouraging collaboration and cooperation.

    - The last few years there have been lay-offs across much of the company, so stability is questionable. There are always very limited resources with many specific jobs, where they will have only one person performing specific tasks, only they know how to perform. When they leave or are laid off there are huge gaps in knowledge and detrimental effects on the employees around them, and no one seems willing to fix this issue. Employees usually need to work long hours to make up for the lack of enough people available to do the job in the time required.

    - Lack of training opportunities. It is difficult to get training due to lack of budget and willingness to invest in employees. There have been multiple cases where my colleagues have had to pay for training themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While there are pockets of really great departments and people, there are also some toxic managers who have political agendas that don't align with the mission, making it really difficult to recommend City of Hope to any of my friends. Key and knowledgeable personnel usually leave due to lack of support and resources, or poor management. More careful scrutiny is needed for departments with high turnover and employee complaints and there must be willingness to remove these managers, or the company will never be able to keep good personnel.

The lack of budget for some very key projects severely limits resources needed, and strains employees, again, causing good employees to seek employment elsewhere.
