I worked at City of Palo Alto, CA full-time

    Pros

Some very hard working and smart people here

    Cons

Nasty politics. Dishonest managers. High-school style "pets." Surpising racist remarks from a very senior manager. All of this is tolerated.

Unless you're in the union or have been there 20 years (many people fit both categories), benefits are poor. So are salaries. For those in the 20+ bracket, salaries are offset by rich benefits and retirement (including health care). Not the case for most others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good city manager needs to shake up his direct reports for positive change.
