Once was great; now, circling the drain...

I have been working at Cloudmark full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good salary and health package, excellent vacation time
Excellent technology package overall, nobody else has as good an anti-spam solution
    Free bagels on Fridays
Decent work-life balance - you can go home at 5:30 every day and not feel guilty (but see below for caveats)

    Cons

Most of the senior management has been here 8-10 years or more. As a result, management have no clue how to compete in areas outside of the company's core competency of anti-spam. The core anti-spam business generates most of the revenue and things like mobile & DNS get wildly optimistic forecasts which don't pan out, but still drain inordinate amounts of resources (money & staff). Two rounds of layoffs over the last four years as a result.

Two engineering VPs for only about 15 engineers. The line managers have little to no authority - exec staff tends to throw things out and simply expect them to get done rather than have managers assign tasks.

Culture of presenteeism - management expects people to be at their desks 9-5 every day, as "getting work done" means "sitting at your desk staring at your screen." Working at home is frowned upon extensively, so forget about a flexible schedule.

Company is penny-wise and pound-foolish - large quantities of money are squandered on operations for little return, but expect to be nickel-and-dimed on any expenses that may actually help you get your job done (new equipment, etc.) Staffing has suffered as well; staff who leave aren't replaced in many cases.

Operations/IT are out of their depth; mostly make changes for their own convenience, rather than for business reasons, with predictable results.

No career advancement track, at all. You'll stay in your role until you leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice would be to the board: the executive staff are far too stagnant and crusty at this point, and they've had their chance. Let them all go or transition them to roles where they have no authority, and bring in new blood with fresh ideas to bring this company to the next level. It was great once. It can be again.
