I have been working at College of American Pathologists full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits, good internal training offered by HR. Many long term employees and MANY good non-management workers who are team players and hard workers.

    Cons

The biggest con at the CAP is upper management that is incompetent. A lot of favoritism, too much management and not enough workers. Too many managers of no one and very top heavy management that does not listen to the needs of the employees. Tendency to push technology into the production state before fully tested and kinks worked out causing problems and delays on the working class who have to deal with multiple time consuming work- arounds. This just ends up being added stress on the workers. Many employees, even those who have been at CAP long term are unhappy with management decisions that make no sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN to your lower level staff....to those that are on the front lines with the customers. Get out of the offices and meeting rooms and actually sit with the workers and see the frustrations and problems that are dealt with on a daily basis. Do not show favoritism to staff and departments. Realize that just because someone has been there a long time does not make them upper management material. Promote those who deserve it, not those who simply have the years in. Biggest pet peeve of the company. Terminate those that don't make the grade...don't promote them or design positions around them. Get rid of some of the "non-managing" managers. Too top heavy. Notice and acknowledge non-management contributions and frustrations.
