I worked at Comverse full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Casual dress, free coffee, reliable (though low) paycheck.

    Cons

Upper management seems to rule by confusion. There is no communication other than rumors. Some months, layoffs occur weekly which causes a work paralysis when managers won't okay forward movement and workers go office to office trying to find out what's going on with both projects and their own future employment. There are no career paths and your HR status (beginner, intermediate, expert) is "secret." You have to be friends with the right person to have any upward mobility. Managers are tech experts with few people skills. After all of the layoffs, there are many smart people who are starting to leave. Comverse isn't interested in retaining talent or expertise. The culture is to not communicate and not cooperate and this starts at the top.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Since salaries were frozen eight years ago, the only real perk was the ability to work from home. That was eliminated two years ago. You need to reinstate the work from home option, especially since evening and weekend work is expected. Get rid of the Bell Curve for ratings. That should have been eliminated in 1990. Retain your talent by giving them raises now, not by trying to buy them back when they are leaving.
