I have been working at Container Store part-time for more than 5 yearsPros
Generous employee discount, made some very good friends working at TCS, limited benefits for part-time, more formal training than other retail storesCons
*High turnover in our store with very little room for advancement especially if you're part-time.
*Full-time employees and store managers that have left the company while I've been here have all been replaced from the outside.
*Full-time employees have input in part-time reviews but not vice-versa.
*Ever since the company went public it is ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS--even if you are one of the top performers it is never enough; if you're an elfa designer there is even more pressure with numbers to hit a minimum dollar amount for master closets, % of same-day closes, % of spaces sold compared to your total , % of sales installed by elfa Installation; if the customer wants to think about it and purchase another day when you're not working you get no credit for the sale; however, elfa sales numbers are a part of your review and it does have an impact on your raise.
*Closing shifts require cleaning and getting the store ready for the next day--part-timers usually get to clean the restrooms.
*We used to be chastised if we didn't meet certain goals for obtaining email addresses; now it has changed to signing up people for a new perk (be sure not to say "rewards" or "loyalty") program using new tablets; the new tablets do not allow you to simultaneously ring up sales at the register while they sign up--this has translated to longer lines and angry customers.
*Managers are too often behind closed doors in a meeting or on a conference call.
*Computers/registers & tablets go down regularly.Advice to ManagementAdvice
Consider adding a leadership development program to promote from within; if you must spend the money on sending executive leadership to stores for a pep talk several hours before the store opens and then meeting with managers behind closed doors, how about also spending time with customers on the selling floor and at the registers while the store is open?Doesn't RecommendNegative OutlookDisapproves of CEO
