Tons of bureaucracy, terrible infrastructure and whiny students

Current Employee - Adjunct Professor in Chicago, IL
Current Employee - Adjunct Professor in Chicago, IL

I have been working at DeVry University as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Not a lot of course development or grading if you are up for using mediocre and often hodge-podge lesson plans provided by school

    Cons

The bureaucracy is maddening. They have countless different intranet systems that don't communicate well. No benefits, no stability. Semesters are 2 months, and lowly adjuncts get last picks, so you only find out what (and if) you are teaching at most two weeks prior to the semester. And there is a weird whinyness in the students. Too much work, or this is too hard, or I don't like this. This is college folks, suck it up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut back on all the unnecessary managerial stuff. I know accreditation is a problem and you hope to patch it over by employing coutnless software platforms to cover your butts, but you are going to drive away any teacher with half a brain - which might be more important to you mission as educators

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
